Color Grading
I was glad to do the Color Grading for this short film directed by Gisel Magallón and created by students and alumni of the CCC. This story tells the journey of Mariana, who attends a grief support group after the death of her best friend, Rosa, a victim of femicide. Guided by Clara, the group’s therapist, and supported by the other members, Mariana relives moments with Rosa and unravels the whirlwind of emotions caused by her loss.
As a colorist, I worked on enhancing the contrast to emphasize the elements within the image, added grain to achieve a more cinematic look, and contributed to the overall depth.
Subtle vignettes were added to move it away from a commercial style, and in the scenes that evoke memories, halation was subtly applied to the highlights to reinforce the nostalgic emotion.
To give the characters greater strength, I increased contrast and lightly tinted the shadows with blue.
I also reinforced the shadows in areas that did not require attention and added grain so that certain elements would regain sharpness.
I reduced the overall green tone and added a slight vignette to keep the light focused on the character’s action.
I generated the deliverables in different compressions and codecs such as H.264, Apple ProRes, and handled the DCP mastering.
Many thanks to producer Luis, director Gisel, and the whole team for trusting me.
